Sandy Hill Academy

Welcome

We are delighted that your child has been offered a Reception place at Sandy Hill Academy starting in September 2026. We are very much looking forward to your child starting their learning journey with us.

Starting school is an exciting milestone, and we know how important it is to make this first step feel calm, positive, and carefully supported. Our transition package is designed to give every child the strongest possible start, beginning with Reception teachers visiting Nursery settings, childminders, or carrying out home visits in the summer term so children can meet their new teacher in a familiar environment and we repeat these visits if needed to help build confidence and connection.

In preparation for their transition to our setting, here are some key dates:

Information Evening – Thursday 18th June 17:00 – 18:00

We invite you to meet the team and find out more about getting your child ready for school. There is no need to confirm your attendance, just come along to the main school entrance and we will sign you in.

For those of you unable to attend the Starting Reception meeting, all information will be shared during your individual parent/ teacher meeting. If you were not present at the meeting to book this appointment we will call you to arrange.

We have an experienced, passionate and dedicated team that work in the Early Years. Please click on the book below to find out all about us.. we can't wait to find out about our new starters and their families too!

Starting school is a huge milestone for young children, and having strong fundamental skills makes the transition smoother and more enjoyable. When children can confidently put on their coat and shoes, they feel capable and ready to join in with daily routines. These small acts of independence build self-esteem and reduce stress during busy moments like playtime or home time.

Together, these early abilities lay the groundwork for confidence, resilience, and a positive start to school life. The following video and booklet contain further information with preparing your child for school.

A smooth start to school begins with confidence in everyday independence, and toilet training is an important part of that readiness. This short introduction supports parents in helping children recognise their needs, use the toilet reliably, and manage simple self-care. Building these early skills helps children feel comfortable, capable, and prepared as they take their exciting next step into school life.

Daily toothbrushing habits make a real difference to children’s long‑term health, and our school supports this through the Big Brush Club, funded by the NHS. Children in Nursery and Reception clean their teeth every day as part of their routine, helping them build confidence and consistency. This introduction explains why tooth brushing skills matter and how families can support good habits at home, strengthening the foundations for healthy smiles.

Starting school with MC Grammar

To support a calm, confident transition into school, our staff have recorded videos of themselves reading The Colour Monster. This is the first text we explore in Reception, and it helps children recognise and talk about the emotions they may feel when starting school. By watching familiar adults share the story, children begin to connect with the characters, understand their own feelings, and build the emotional vocabulary they’ll use throughout their early learning journey.
