PE or Physical Education is a key driver in the development of well-rounded citizens at Sandy Hill due to the values it harnesses

In PE we aim to:

  • Develop a love of physical activity for life through high quality PE
  • Enhance the physical literacy journey in all learners
  • Further enhance social, emotional and physical wellbeing in all children 

In School Sport we aim to:

  • Provide enriching, engaging and extension opportunities for all 

In Physical Activity we aim to:

  • Provide 30 minutes of physical activity within the school day to all learners and encourage 30 minutes of physical activity outside of school

In Nursery, we have been contributing to our positive physical development by exploring how different resources can help us develop our fine and gross motor physical skills. We have recently been using our parachute to help strengthen our muscles!

In Reception, PE is incorporated within the 'Physical Development' area of learning. At Sandy Hill Academy, children have discrete PE sessions where they are taught fundamental physical skills. Children have many opportunities to develop their small and large motor skills through their play and adult directed activities. Within this area of learning, children are taught about keeping healthy including; the importance of physical exercise, personal hygiene including teeth brushing, pedestrian safety, having a good sleep routine and sensible amounts of 'screen time'. Children enjoy our 'dough gym' sessions during each week where children are building the strength in their hands. Children enjoy 'Funky Finger' activities that are built into activities that children engage with during the day. These activities are designed to support children's fine motor control and development. Many of these activities consist of small objects to construct with, supporting dexterity. Children use a range of tools to support control and coordination such as; using tweezers to transport items or knives in the play dough.
Within the classroom children also practice Yoga: within yoga children are working on their core strength and stability. We focus on being mindful and breathing techniques, where we are able to notice any changes and feelings within our bodies.

Year 1
In Year 1 this term we have been practising different athletic skills such as sprinting, javelin throwing and long jump. The children have been working on improving their technique throughout the lesson and beating their personal best. 
"I like PE because you get to do lots of exercise and it keeps your body healthy." Year 1, age 5.
"PE is so much fun. I really liked using the javelin and I threw it so far when I stood sideways. It went like a rocket!" Year 1, age 6.
Year 2
In Year 2 we have been learning lots of new skills in Athletics. We have been running at different paces and distances, throwing and catching, running over hurdles, jumping and skipping.

Year 3
In Year 3 we have been developing our athletic skills in running, throwing and jumping.  The children also keep active throughout each day (as part of Active 30:30) and enjoy taking part in a variety of activities, including skipping and dancing. 
'I can't believe we ran 1.6 miles; it's the furthest I have ever run!' Year 3 child, aged 8.
'I love relay races - it's so much fun running as part of a team.'  Year 3 child, aged 7. 
Year 4
In Year 4, we always enjoy our active times throughout the day. This term, we have been outside taking part in many athletics challenges including, different kinds of jumps, throwing technique and team races. We always try to achieve our personal best and focus on our values, which this term have been; encouragement, imagination, communication and integrity. We also enjoy the occasional dance lesson!

Year 5
In Year 5, we have improved a range of athletics skills. We have been improving our stamina and ability to run at a consistent pace over different distances. We have also been working on different types of throws required for different sports.

"In javelin lessons, I have beaten my personal best!" Year 5 pupil, aged 9.
Year 6
In Year 6, we have been developing our athletics skills: running (short and long distance), throwing and jumping. 
We have also worked on the planet values: encouragement, imagination, fairness, honesty, integrity, communication and decision-making. 
'In PE we have been learning about the long jump and triple jump. As a warm-up, we do leg exercises to build our leg strength' Year 6 pupil aged 10
Wider Curriculum

Year 6 have loved taking part in Active 30:30 - as part of the 30 minutes active we build into the school day. Physical activity can be seen across the curriculum. They have also had a great time taking part in the various virtual intra and inter school competitions this year.

We have placed personal development at the heart of our school. In EYFS they focus on developing understanding of the school rules, in KS1, they focus on the school rules and the STARS values but in KS2 they focus on both of these plus half-termly My Personal Best planet values. My Personal Best is a highly effective Youth Sport Trust initiative that drives personal development through PE, School Sport and Physical Activity initially before it filters throughout the rest of school life. At Sandy Hill we embrace this.
