Curriculum Intent

In Music we aim to:

Music supports the development of many crucial learning characteristics and enables children to achieve ‘My Personal Best’ and the values of Sandy Hill Academy.

In Music, pupils are actively encouraged to engage with music as part of a healthy, balanced approach to learning.

At Sandy Hill Academy we:

  • Provide music curriculum lessons that are timetabled and sequenced to allow the progressive development of learning skills and knowledge through regular teaching/weekly teaching
  • Schemes of Work appropriately reflect the learning needs of all pupils, to allow engaged learning to take place.
  • The music curriculum is broad and balanced to reflect the needs of all learners.
  • Pupils and staff demonstrate a willingness to participate in and respond positively to artistic, musical and cultural opportunities.
  • Pupils are able to positively articulate their experiences of music that they are exposed to through their school life.
  • Pupils are able to express themselves through music both in the curriculum, and through programmed extra-curricular activities.
  • To deliver high-quality singing lessons
  • To provide weekly singing opportunities: through collective worship, choir, vocal lessons from peripatetic teachers and cross-curricular learning.
  • Our school proactively uses music to promote fundamental British Values.
  • Our school uses music to engage parents/carers and the wider community.

Nursery
In Nursery Music is incorporated within the Expressive Arts and Design aspect of the EYFS curriculum. We have recently enjoyed celebrating Nursery Rhyme Week and the children thoroughly enjoyed singing a variety of Nursery Rhymes in small groups.

Reception
In Reception, Music is incorporated within the 'Expressive Arts and Design'  area of learning. Within Music children will learn to listen attentively, move to and talk about music, expressing their feelings and responses. Children will sing within small groups or on their own, increasingly following pitch and the melody.  Within the indoor and outdoor environments children will explore and engage in music making and dance, performing solo or in groups and have musical instruments and props at hand to support free play within music. Children have explored different instruments, naming them and learning how the different instruments are played. We had an online webinar with a violinist from the BBC Ten Pieces Orchestra, she played different types of music and we reflected on how it made us feel and what we thought of while we were listening.

Year 1
In Year 1 we have enjoyed listening to music linked to our topic of Seasonal Changes. We have completed rhythm activities where we have clapped the rhythm and matched the rhythm to the correct word or phrase. We also followed a graphic score and discussed what the music reminded us of. For our Christmas nativity we learned some traditional Christmas songs which we recorded for our parents and carers.

"I liked it when we used the rhythm cards to clap the rhythm. It was a bit tricky to match the words to them at first but I got better by the end." Year 1, age 5. 
Year 2
In Year 2 we were lucky enough to experience a musician's performance online as part of the BBC Ten Pieces project. Carolyn the Viola player performed 'In The Hall of the Mountain King' from Peer Gynt to us and we conducted and clapped along. At the end of the session we were able to ask her questions about what it means to be a musician as a career.
 
We learnt all about what genre of music was popular in 1666 when The Great Fire of London happened. We found out that Baroque music was popular at the time and we discovered what instruments they played.
 
We listened to 'Music for the Royal Fireworks' by Handel and used descriptive language and the elements of music to describe what we could hear and how the music made us feel.
 
"I would like to be a musician when I am older as I want everyone to listen to me on the radio." Year 2 pupil, age 7.
 
"Handel's Firework music makes me feel sleepy as you watch fireworks when it is dark and I should be in bed." Year 2 pupil, age 6.
Year 3
In Year 3, we have been learning about Egyptian music and instruments.  We also enjoyed participating in a virtual music workshop hosted by the BBC Ten piece music project.  We were able to learn about the life of a musician and participated in a 'West Side Story' music performance.  
 
'I would love to learn to play the viola and perform on stage.' Year 3 pupil, age 7. 
 
 
Year 4
In Year 4, we have enjoyed a music workshop from the BBC Ten Pieces project where we learnt about incidental film music. After the lesson, we used the iPads to go onto the Keezy app and create our own incidental music. We have also learnt about Roman musical instruments and some songs about the Romans. 
 
"I love creating different sounds on the iPads, I want to recreate the Harry Potter soundtrack!" - Year 4 pupil, aged 9. 
Year 5
In Year 5, we have learnt about 3 influential musicians and the styles of music they created. We have also been learning about Viking musical instruments and comparing them to the instruments available today.
 
We also took part in a virtual workshop as part of BBC 10 Pieces. During this, we were introduced to a Viola player, who talked to us about his career, his instruments and the story of the musical 'West Side Story'.
 
"I enjoyed learning about Stormy's life and how he has supported other people to better themselves." Year 5 pupil, aged 10.
 
"It was really fun learning some of the songs from West Side Story!" Year 5 pupil, aged 9.
Year 6
Year 6 have been comparing different WW2 songs using musical vocabulary but also applying some vocabulary they have developed in English sessions. They have looked at the meanings and context of the songs as well as their importance. We have studied the history of music looking at how new genres developed.
 
BBC 10 pieces set up a meeting over Zoom to talk about the famous piece of music 'planets' - a talented Cello player talked Year 6 through his intriguing instrument and the piece of music.

The Wider Curriculum
The Music curriculum and the Computing curriculum compliment each other. Children are able to develop their Music composition and listening skills through the use of technology and are able to develop their computing skills whilst completing music activities. Keezy and Garageband are two Apps that provide our children with a chance to develop their music technology skills.
Each class from Nursery to Year 6 had the opportunity to listen to a professional musician as part of the BBC Ten Pieces project. This included a question and answer session with each musician about what it means to choose to be a musician as your career. We learnt about the variety of work being a professional musician entails, such as recording, performing, rehearsing, travelling and composing. This sparked discussions in each class about who would choose this as a career path and many of our pupils felt that this would be an interesting option for their future.
