Reception

Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to school. I hope you had a lovely Christmas holiday.

We have come back to Reception with a very exciting week!

On Monday we talked about our favourite Christmas presents. We had to speak in complete sentences, describe our presents and use interesting words. We also had to make sure that we listened to the other members of our class when they spoke. We also drew our favourite Christmas presents on the computer.

On Tuesday we used the time connectives first, then, next and finally to sequence the things we did on Christmas day. For example, first I opened my presents. Next I ate my Christmas lunch. Then I played with my new toys and watched television. Finally I went to bed as I had had a busy day.

We also had our first zumba session on Tuesday afternoon with Charlotte the zumba instructor. It was very exciting as Charlotte showed us how to move to the music. We pretended to be aeroplanes and penguins! By the end Mrs Bawden was very hot and tired but we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

On Wednesday we went on the coach to watch 'The Hare and the Tortoise' at the Drum Theatre. We had a fantastic time and as always your children were so well behaved. They really make me proud! There was a surprise ending as the tortoise did not win the race... it was a draw! This led to a lovely discussion where the hare and tortoise walked through the audience asking what things we are good at. We will be practising using our phonic skills to write all about our trip.

Reminders:

Friday 11th January is an INSET day so the school will be closed.

Although swimming starts on Wednesday 16th January, Reception class will not be swimming until after half term. Our first swimming lesson is Wednesday 27th February. The swimming buses and times are on the classroom window. We usually arrive about 15-20 minutes before your child's swimming session starts so if you are going to be available to help your child get changed you will need to arrive then. Please wait in the changing room for your child as it can all be a little confusing if parents wait in the entrance to Polkyth.
If you have any swimming queries, please ask myself or Mrs Edyvean.

On zumba days (Tuesdays), PE days (Fridays) and swimming days (Wednesdays) it would be very useful for the girls to wear trousers rather than tights as this makes it easier for them to get changed. If your child has trainers or plimsolls, these are recommended to be worn for zumba, so please send them in and we will keep them with your child's PE kit. Black tracksuits are recommended for swimming days as they are easier to wear.

This week we had our Christmas party. We played party games and ate lots of yummy party food. Delicious!
altAn energetic game of musical statues!
altRefuelling!

This morning we went to Nursery for a singalong. We learnt some new songs and actions and we sang 'Santa Claus is coming to town' to the Nursery children and staff. It was nice to go back and visit.

Today was Christmas lunch and we had the chance to show off our amazing hats.

In the afternoon, Year 3 came to visit to show us the fantastic Nativity books they had made. They had moving parts, and Year 3 had clearly worked hard on them. Well done!

alt

Then it was our time to show off to our grown ups by showing them our Learning Diaries and how much we have achieved this term. Can it really only be our first term at school?

alt

Thank you again for a fantastic first term. See you all on Monday 7th January feeling relaxed and happy after the holidays.

What a busy week!
A big congratulations has to be said to my gorgeous sheep and angels. Didn't they look and sound fabulous? Future stars in the making! Thank you for providing them with such lovely costumes. I think Reception stole the show (but then I am biased).

As well as entertaining everyone with our Nativity, we have also squeezed in some Christmas activities in the classroom too (it is no wonder we are all so tired).

altOn Thursday we made delicious robin biscuits with Mrs Jones. Yum!

altWe have been playing in our Christmas roleplay. We dressed up as Santa, reindeer and elves and we sat in our sleigh talking about the journey we need to make to deliver all of the presents.

altWe ordered Christmas items by size at our Mathematics area.

altWe used Christmas ribbons and Christmas stickers to make creative works of art.

Reminders:

Please can all children bring in their polling day homework Christmas hats and design sheets on Monday as we will be wearing them on Wednesday for Christmas lunch.

Tuesday is party day so party clothes and sensible shoes to be worn please. There is a food list on the classroom window if you would like to donate some food for the children to eat. Children will still need packed lunches and school dinners that day.

Wednesday is Christmas lunch. If you have not already booked a lunch for your child that day then I am afraid it is too late so please provide a packed lunch for your child that day. We will also be having an open session from 2:30pm onwards on that day for you to come in to the classroom and take a look at your child's learning diary with them.

Thursday is the last day of term and school finishes at 2pm.

Your child will bring home some holiday homework this week. This will consist of 3 reading books, words, phonics, a number formation sheet and number cards to order and recognise.

Please return all swimming letters and money by or on the first day of next term.

Thank you for a fantastic first term. We look forward to seeing you all on Monday 7th January.

Merry Christmas from Mrs Bawden and Mrs Edyvean
Now that December has arrived, it is finally Christmas in Reception class.
Each day we open an Advent box to find something Christmassy inside. On Tuesday Bradley opened box number 4 to reveal some Christmas cards. We talked about what we might write in our cards and who we might give them to.
alt

We then used the Christmas cards to decorate boxes to make a sleigh for our role play area. We had to carefully cut out pictures from the cards using the right scissors for us, share glue sticks, find an area on the box where our pictures would fit, and work as a group to make the sleigh look the best we could.

alt

alt

alt

alt

alt

Now the boxes are decorated we can trun them into a sleigh for Father Christmas and he can deliver all of the presents we have been busy wrapping.

We have also been using our counting skills to count how many more 'big sleeps' it is until Christmas day. As the number gets smaller the children become more excited and Mrs Bawden and Mrs Edyvean become more panicky!

Nativity.
There is a dress rehearsal on Friday 7th December so we need all costumes in. Please can you return the letter about face painting (for sheep only) and the consent letter about being on the Nativity DVD. We are very excited about showing you our performance and how hard we have been working.

All library packs will be collected in on Manday and will not be reissued until after Christmas. There will also be no more Mathematics homework until after Christmas. We will be sending home extra reading books, words and phonics to keep you busy! It would also be nice for the children to write or draw about their Christmas holidays to show in class when they return on 7th January.

The last day of term is Thursday 20th December and school finishes at 2pm.
To follow on from our work on 'The Gruffalo' story by Julia Donaldson, we decided to read the sequel, 'The Gruffalo's Child'. This is a fantastic story for this time of year as it is set in Winter. So when Mrs Jago-Spires asked us to do a Winter display in the hall we knew exactly what we wanted to do!

We had to work hard to make our display perfect because it will be in full view when everyone comes to see our Nativity play. This meant lots of working together and improving our cutting and creativity skills.

First we printed white hand prints on to green paper to make snowy treetops.

alt

Then we drew around our hands on brown paper and cut them out ourselves.
alt

Then we worked in pairs or small groups to make 'The Gruffalo's Child' characters.
We made the snake,
alt

the owl,
alt

the fox,
alt

the Gruffalo's Child,
alt

and, of course, the Gruffalo himself!
alt

Here is our finished display. I am sure you will agree that it looks amazing! Haven't your children done a fantastic job? Well done everyone.
alt

Our work on 'The Gruffalo' has inspired us in lots of ways. Look at our fantastic writing.
alt

alt

alt

What wonderful use of our phonic knowledge to write our own Gruffalo sentences.

We also talked about cold weather and observed some ice cubes melting. We used words such as 'cold', 'hard', 'slippery', and 'melting' to talk about what we saw.

What a busy week.

Next week our classroom is being turned into a Santa's workshop where we will be designing and building our own toys, wrapping presents, making Santa's sleigh, role playing in Santa's grotto, and composing Christmas music. So exciting!

Reminders:
Please can we have all Nativity costumes in in named bags. All Reception boys are sheep and all Reception girls are angels. We have sent a letter home in the boys' bookbags asking for permission to use face paint. Please can you return those slips by Monday 3rd December.

Nativity tickets go on sale on Monday (3rd) at 8:15am. The Infant Nativity performances are 11/11/12 at 3:15pm and 12/11/12 at 1:15pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

We are collecting Christmas lunch slips and money (£2.20) so please bring in to class in a labelled, sealed envelope by Monday 10th December.

We are collecting swimming consent forms and money (£15.00) so please bring in in a sealed, labelled envelope.

Last thing I promise...
School lunches! The children are making decisions about which menu choice they would like for their school dinner when the register is done in the morning. We have put a copy of the menu on the classroom window. Please can you discuss these options with your child so that they understand what they will be having. There is a meat option, a vegetarian option , and jacket potatoes.

Thank you.
