On Monday last week 8 Year 4 children went with Miss Harris to Padstow School for a ‘Mondrian Maths Challenge Day’. This was a fun day packed with lots of problem solving which was enjoyed by all. Here are some of the comments the children made about the day:
‘It was brilliant.’
‘The best part was learning about percentages’
‘Making the cubes was hard but fun!’
‘What a great day!’
‘I really enjoyed finding cubic numbers’
‘I enjoyed working with children from Padstow school.’
This workshop was based on the famous artist ‘Piet Mondrian’. Throughout the day the children had to use their maths skills to create a cube from a net and decorate each face using the colours that Mondrian used in his artwork. But, it was not as simple as that! The children learnt about percentages and had to use this knowledge to then cut each piece of coloured paper into a percentage so as to achieve the overall ‘Mondrian’ effect.
