Miss Carter's Blog

Caterpillars, white rabbits and mad-hatters!!! Just what you need at the end of a hard-working Assessment Week!!

Sandy Hill hall has been turned (for one day only!) into the Mad-Hatters Tea-party! The children are currently enjoying cakes and squash whilst admiring some fantastic outfits! PLease look at the class-blogs for details and photos of this super day. Why have we gone more crazy than usual?? We are celebrating World-Book day and at the same time raising money for Comic-Relief (total money raised to follow).

Thank-you, once again, for the super costumes we can see aroud the Academy.

It's a great way to finish Assessment week as the children have been working extremely hard to complete different assessment tests and tasks. These weeks are very important for us as they allow the teachers to analysis progress made so far and importantly plan where each child needs to go next with their learning. As I'm sure you saw during Open Afternoon, the children and staff are working extremely hard.

WE have also been able to celebrate this week as Mr Weale's great football team spent last Saturday playing at Bristol in the English School's Association Regional Finals. This is the second time in 3 years that the school have qualified to represent Cornwall. Eventhough they did not lose a game - they didn't go through to the next round due to a one goal difference!!! We are very proud of them though and a huge thank-you to Mr WEale, Mr Goodwin and all the parents that gave up their Saturday to support the boys.

We have also been working very hard on the quality of teaching in the Academy. With the introduction of the new Ofsted framework - the standards are now set even higher than before. Our teachers and teaching-assistants have been working hard with the staff from the other academies in the trust to find techniques and strategies that allow your children to access learning like never before. Our last round of observations showed that over 50% of teaching was graded Outstanding - which we were extremely pleased with. I am proud of the school-improvement work that is going on whilst we strive to be the very best we can for your children.

Comic-Relief Day is next Friday so Red-Noses will be on sale from Monday onwards. Children can come in non-school uniform on that day - bright red if possible! We will let you know the grand total from today's cake-baking fundraiser very soon!

I have just returned from a Teddy Bear's Picnic in our own school hall! The Reception class (and some very furry friends) are enjoying the bear biscuits they have baked this week. Even a spare one was ready for me! Delicious!

The class have been enjoying a visit from Henry Bear all week. Henry lives in North America and has been telling the children all about his life and experiences.  Why is Mrs Bawden inviting strange bears in, you may be asking?! Well, the result (other than a fantastic week of fun, art and learning) has been some of the best writing I have ever seen at this age. The children are so engaged- they are desperate to get their ideas and descriptions down on paper. The daily phonics sessions and your continuing support is giving these children a wonderful start to their school-life and foundations that will open up so many opportunities.

"I am little, brown and I have a red ribbon."

"I am brown and cuddly. I have a bow and big feet."

"I have a black hat and a blue coat. I come from Peru."

Have a look on the class blogs to see more details of the wonderful week for Year R and also all the other learning that is happening around the Academy.

2012 seems to have sped by extremely quickly and here we are preparing for another new year already.  It’s been a great run up to Christmas with our successful school plays getting everyone in the mood for the festive break. The children have behaved brilliantly during this busy time with many of them fighting germs and illness.
WE enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch yesterday – piles of sprouts, potatoes and stuffing balls and that was just for Mr Weale!

The staff cannot THANK YOU enough for the phenomenal effort put into the party hat project! The hats are looking amazing and really helped our lunch go with a swing.

It’s been another busy term with Tudor days, our football team becoming county champions, our choir performing at Restormal Proms, torchlit carnivals, excellent results at St Austell Music Festival -to name but a few.
As-ever, we work together as a team to achieve the successes we do. So thank you for your support and hard work.
Have a super Christmas and see you on 7thJanuary 2013!

Miss Carter

We are now 5 weeks into the new school year – with summer mornings seeming an extremely long time ago!

The children are now settled into their new classes and work is well under way.  All targets have been set so that we have a clear journey planned for each cohort which means that children should reach their full academic abilities.  Individual targets have now also been set for your children in reading, writing and maths eg, To organise my writing into paragraphs.  These targets are in target cards and are referred to in all your children do.  All targets should be home to you by the end of this week so you can see what your child is working upon and support them.

Football & netball matches are now underway with many children representing the Academy in all weathers! Thank you Teams & Teachers!
Many new clubs have also started including Craft and Cookery (Yum!) We are so pleased to report that two Choirs have also been started and already invited to perform at The Cornwall Proms on October 20th at The Keay Theatre.  Come along and support us if you can.

I have also been doing some work with the Senior Leadership team and an external inspector to make sure that we are continuing to improve the provision we offer. I will let you know our Academy targets next week so that you can see the areas we are working even harder at! You may see in the news that Ofsted are raising expectations again – it’s certainly exciting times for education and for your children.

Parents meetings will happen on 26th November so that you can come in and find out exactly how your child is doing in their new class. Please come in before, however, if you have any queries.

We hope you’ve all had a great summer break.
It’s great to see the children back healthy, smiling and looking very smart in their yellow jumpers. We will enjoy the sunshine now – even if we didn’t have it over the holidays!
There’s a great feeling about the start of a new academic year with a genuine excitement about what the year ahead can hold for us.  You may have seen in the local press that we were the most oversubscribed school in Cornwall this year and this makes us even more determined to continue to strive to maintain the very best standards and care that we can for your children.
We have many things planned already and I will be in touch very shortly with details about where our priorities lie for 2012-13.
You will be very involved this year as we would like you to help us develop areas such as reports and online results so continue to read the newsletter, website and my blog for details and requests!
KS2 parents – please try to attend the ‘Welcome Meetings’ if possible next week to find out about your child’s new year group.
We also wish our Year 6’s from last year all the best at their new secondary schools. They were a great cohort who achieved excellent results before they left.  Congratulations and good luck.
Enjoy the first few weeks back and we look forward to working with you and your children.
