Nursery

Over the last two weeks the nursery children have been talking about special days and celebrations. We looked at some of the special days that we enjoy, such as birthdays and candles, bonfire night and fireworks and Christmas with its lights and presents and then we travelled to India on our magic carpet to learn about Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights and find out about some of similarities to our own special days.

The children enjoyed hearing and sequencing the traditional story of Prince Rama, Princess Sita and how she was rescued from the ten headed monster, Ravanna.
alt

We made diya lamps from saltdough and decorated them with paint, glitter and sequins and then enjoyed singing ‘This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine’. Some children used their imagination at the playdough table and used available tools and resources to create more diya lamps!

alt

We made our own mendi hands using string dipped in brown paint and then some children made their own mendi hands in the outside area using large chalks.
alt

A large tiger came to visit us in the nursery.  We listened to the story "The Tiger That Came To Tea" and then retold the story later in the week and the children held their own tea parties.  We also enjoyed "Handa's Surprise" and we squenced the story using different fruit cards.

alt

We did an Indian dance using scarves whilst listening to some Bollywood music.

The nursery has been looking at rockets and travelling into space this week. We even had a picnic on the moon!

We have been learning about some 3D shapes and made our own rockets using cylinders and cones. We talked about the fireworks we have seen in the night sky and the children came up with some lovely descriptive words, such as ‘Zazzing’, ‘zooming’, ‘whoosh’ and ‘fizz’.  Come and look at our fabulous display on the classroom wall and read more of our describing words.
alt

We have been learning about long and short.
alt

We have built rockets with the multi-cubes and placed them in order of size from shortest to longest.
alt
We measured our rockets to see if they were longer or shorter than the ribbons.

Climb aboard the spaceship, we are going to the moon!
alt

We made stars ready for the Torchlight Carnival.
We have been practising our cutting skills.
alt
The animals escaped this week and got themselves muddled up.  We sorted them into sets so they could be fed the right food because we didn’t think the tigers would eat the same food as the polar bears!

alt

We had fun in the big playground with the parachute and the hoops. We flapped the parachute up and down, we went under it and we bounced balls on it. We jumped in and out of the hoops, stood next to them, on them and under them.

On Friday we watched a Powerpoint that explained why we wear Poppies and how they are made.
Then we made our own.
 alt
Just a quick reminder that the nursery will be closed for Polling next Thursday 15th November and next Friday 16th November is Children in Need.

An interesting and exciting week has engaged our learning in the nursery this week.
We have been listening to rhyming strings of words and made whole class potions in our cauldron and also our own "Smiley Potions."
We had a dog and a frog, a bear and a pear, jelly and wellie and many other exciting ingredients.  we especially enjoyed the story Room on the Broom where we sequenced the events of the story.

alt

We made our own witch pictures after enjoying the story of Meg and Mog.
alt

We scooped out our own pumpkin and counted the seeds.

alt

Father David came for our very own Harvest Festival assembly in the nursery and he taught us a new nursery rhyme.
Thank you for all the food donations for the St Austell Food Bank.  We also made our own Harvest Mouse made from soda bread and apricots to celebrate harvest which were delicious.

alt

We had an amazing Halloween Party with lots of party games and lovely party food.  Thank you for all the donations the children and staff looked fantastic.  Here are just a few of us dressed up.

Well done everybody for a fantastic half term, we have seen a lots of development with all the children in the nursery especially their listening and speaking skills.  During half term practise putting on your own coats ready for the colder weather when we return.

Happy Half Term, we look forward to seeing you all the week beginning the 5th November.

This week we have had a real focus on working together in small groups.  During these activities we have had to listen to each others ideas, take turns in the conversation and construction.  This activity covered all of our areas of learning these are Communication Language and Literacy, Personal and Social Development,  Space Shape and Measures, Physical Development, Creative Development and Knowledge of the World.

alt

alt

We enjoyed listening to stories in small groups, we the used actions to help tell the story.

Our focus shape this week was a circle.

alt
We also looked at a video clip of babies, we discussed how we had changed from when we were babies.
We looked at the differences between our clothes and the baby clothes.

alt

We also enjoyed dressing our doll with the baby clothing.

alt

We have been focusing on shapes.  We looked for shapes in the nursery.

We looked for shapes that we may find in the local environment.
How many shapes can you see in this carpark photo?

alt

The children looked for shapes around the nursery.
