SATS or skipping?

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been working very hard in Year 6 revising for our

forthcoming SATS.  However, as the sun was shining, we decided to take advantage of this

and work on our skipping skills!

Some of us found it more difficult but by then end of the session we were able to achieve 25 skips!

Some of us managed over 50!  Just look at the fun time we had.

    .

We enjoyed a great time with lots of smiles and laughter!

Valuable Volunteers!

As you know, Year 6 pupils are valuable help around the school and go to other classes occasionally to help.

Here is an example of Tea conducting music in the Nursery.  Great job Tea!

Easter

After Easter, the Year 5 / 6 groups will stop and the Year 6's will be taught by the Year 6 team. This is to consolidate the learning so far, to focus on some Year 6 objectives and to allow some specific preparation for SATs and secondary school.

The children are working really well at the moment and are making great progress.

Your children have brought home an Easter Revision Pack consisting of various homework activities.  Please try to complete as much as you can.  We understand if holidays have been booked and do not wish anyone to worry or be upset by any of this work.  We will be running a homework club on the first Monday back if anyone requires extra support or help.  If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Year 6 team. Thank you.

Lunchtime Stars!

Year 6 have been awarded top table certificates for collecting the most lunchtime stars!  Well done!

Blooming Marvellous Mediums!

We have been very creative again in Art.  This time we have been exploring different mediums and the various effects they produce.  We studied photographs of spring flowers, looking at the tones, colours and shading.  Using sketching pencils, coloured pencils, oil pastels and felt tips we recreated the flowers drawing them onto A3 paper which was folded into quarters.  In each quarter we used a different medium.  The results were fantastic.  Here are some photos of work in progress.

Our completed blooms are on display in Mr. Fielder's office.  He is very pleased with our art work.

What do you think?

Eggsperimental Dragon Eggs!!

We have been experimenting!!!  Linking in with our Literacy topic about dragons,

we carefully rolled hard boiled eggs to crack the shell and picked of a few bits of shell before placing them in water with food dye.  The eggs were left overnight.

Just look how they turned out...........fantastic dragon eggs!!

We wish you a very Happy Easter and look forward to more eggciting projects next term!

Blast Off!

On Monday a couple of us from year 6 and a couple of year 5 children attended a Super Science Day at Padstow School to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week.

We had a busy and exciting day making mind maps to share our knowledge of Space and the planets, thinking about what we might need if we travelled into space, for example, a rocket, fuel, a space suit, oxygen, food, a navigation system, communication system and much more.

We used the computers to design our own rocket, showing the exterior and interior features using as much detail as possible.  Then we began to build our models.

We had to present our models and explain the features.  We then set off for the launch pad !!!  With the other schools, we evaluated each flight, taking into account the time and distance each rocket travelled.  We recorded the results and will continue our learning when we create bar charts to show the results.

Mr Hill pumped air into the base of our rockets and when the pressure built the rockets blasted off!

He did get a bit wet!!!  Some of the rockets had a good blast off and shot 8m into the air!

Art

In art we have been looking at collage and movement and combining these ideas to create some 'Action Art'!

We used our art lesson as an opportunity to explore and express our interests and hobbies. Composition also played a key part in how we chose our colours and shapes which we then used to produce our own personal piece of artwork.

The outcome was amazing!

Numeracy and Literacy

In both lessons we have been taking advantage of the new addition to our school's ICT resources! Our Ipads! We have been using new educational apps to practise our knowledge and skills and to support our learning in Numeracy and Literacy!

Bikeability

Just a reminder, the last bikeability session will take place on Wednesday 20th March 2013.

Please remember your bike and helmet.

Red Nose Day

Another fun day!  How fantastic do we look in our red clothes and noses?

We had a very creative day combining hard work with a little comic relief!

In Numeracy we worked on percentages - using red noses of course!

In Literacy we took the opportunity to explore different poetry features and expressed our thoughts and ideas on comic relief in our poems.

Year 6 Update and Booster Sessions Starting Monday 18th March, 3.00 - 4.30pm

Dear Parents,

I wanted to give you an update on where we are in Year 6!

As you know, it always is very busy, never more so than this week when we have worked extremely hard during assessment week. Congratulations to all the children who have been very focussed and concentrated really well.

We will be starting some booster sessions after school each week, which will target individual / group learning and help prepare for the forthcoming SATs in May. We hope as many children as possible can make these sessions as it will be an excellent opportunity to access lots of exciting, new learning. All the staff are looking forward to sharing these sessions (and the snack to finish too!).  Please complete and return the attached consent form for these sessions as soon as possible.

As well as lots of hard work, I am sure the children will have shared with you some of the light relief we have enjoyed during Film Club. This club has been running at lunchtimes since before Christmas, with a great range of comedy and some drama being enjoyed together.  This has been very popular, especially with the cold weather outside! A huge thank you to all the children who have brought in some popular, classic and current DVDs to share – all PG or U rated are welcome and the film with the most votes is always next on the viewing list!

As well as all the academic work and extension groups that are happening, we have also arranged for some further input with our PSHE curriculum. This Wednesday (13th March) we will have a whole day of workshops and discussions with outside agencies and PCSO Squires. The focus for this is developing social and emotional skills, including how to manage / respond to a range of social situations. Alongside this, we will also be studying actions and consequences of behaviour including safe use of the internet and cyber bullying.

As always, thank you for all your support at home and a huge well done to all the children for their continued hard work. If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to speak with either myself, or Mrs. Matthews who will be more than happy to meet with you.

Hope you all have a super weekend, see you Monday!

Making Music

This week a man from the music service visited our class.  We learned all about repeating rhythms,

the proper name for this is Ostinato.  We listened to a track by Coldplay called clocks and joined

in the rhythm using musical instruments.  The sound was amazing.  We are going to learn more

and follow this up with more music making over the next few weeks.

World Book Day/Comic Relief Bake Off!

A huge thank you to all you parents who put so much time and effort into such amazing costumes and also for sending in ingredients for our bake off.

It was a super day.....just look at the fun we had.

Finally, to finish off the fabby day, Archie was crowned Star Baker!
