Year 3

This week we have worked very hard, completing tests for assessment week.

On Friday we came to school dressed in spots for Children in Need.
During the day we had the chance to play our 'Friendship Games' we created for homework. We had a fantastic time!

We also decorated spotty biscuits.

On Monday we learnt all about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot.
We discussed how to stay safe during this exciting event and then made our own air powered fireworks! They looked great and we had such fun launching them in the playground.

On Tuesday we had our first Zumba session this year. We worked up a sweat and thoroughly enjoyed it.

We are continuing our learning about the Tudors. Having previously learnt all about Henry VIII and his six wives, we are now investigating the differences between the lives of the rich and poor in Tudor times. This week we studied lots of different pictures to look for clues as to whether the people in them were rich or poor. Some of us also looked for clues to determine if the people were at work or at leisure. We had lots of great discussion and debates about this.

With the Torchlight Carnival fast approaching we made our own stars to be carried.

Finally this week, we learnt about Remembrance Day, why we wear poppies and why the date is so significant.

Can you remember why we wear poppies?
What happened at 11am, on the 11th Novemeber 1918?

Together we read some lovely poems before writing them up in neat and decorating them. We took them home to share with our familes.

This was one of our favourites:

I'll wear a little poppy,
As red as red can be,
To show that I remember
Those who fought for me.

On Monday we had a very exciting afternoon learning about Felix Baumgartner's jump from space! We watched a video of his jump and were amazed at how far up he was ( 24 miles). We found out that he travelled faster than the speed of sound! Watching the video made us think of all sorts of questions about the atmosphere, why it was light in Mexico when it wasn't light here at the time he jumped, what air pressure was and how gravity meant he fell back to earth.
We were all so engaged in our learning and the record breaking jump that Mrs Green decided we should design a poster so we could tell our families at home about it.
Here are some examples:

In Science we have continued to investigate light and this week we explored how and why shadows are formed. We had to use our knowledge that light only travels in a straight line to work it out! Can you remember why shadows form?

We then went outside to investigate our own shadows. We were able to tell Miss Rogers and Mrs Green where abouts in the sky we thought the sun was, without even looking up! We used our shadows as clues.

In Literacy, we wrote our own stories based in Tudor Times, including lots of powerful verbs and adverbs.

We have had a fantastic DT week and have produced some brilliant products!

Our first project was 'How cool is your drink?
  alt  alt  alt

At the beginning of the week we investigated existing cold drinks. Then we evaluated some cold drinks, recording our evaluation of their appearance, taste and texture.
alt  alt  alt

Our challenge was to design a drink that appealed to Year 3 children so we carried out a questionnaire to find out what our consumers liked and disliked.

 alt  alt
We made a design specification based on our consumer research and then made our cold drink.

Whilst we made our drinks we evaluated them and made any modifications necessary.

Having researched the key features of cold drink labels, we designed our own.

They were delicious!

Our next project was 'Animal Purses'
We looked at and explored different types of wallets and purses. Then we planned our design specification.

We enjoyed sticking and sewing to make our pocket purses.

This week in Science we have been investigating how light travels.
Using Talc Powder we were able to actually see the light beams from a torch and we were set a challenge by Mrs Green to get light to travel through a number on pieces of cards with holes in. We found we had to line up all the holes in order to do this which told us that light only travels in a straight line.

In Art we drew a castle design which we will continue to develop next week onto black paper.

In ICT we have been combining text and graphics to create a WANTED poster for a wife for Henry VIII. We know know how to insert clip art images, picture files saved on computer, changing the size of text, the font, insert a text box AND use word art!
We are very pleased with our posters which will on display in our window shortly.

In Literacy we have continued to focus on powerful verbs and adverbs. We have also started to plan our own ideas for a story with an historical setting.

We have been learning all about life for Tudor children this week. We learnt about Tudor schools: their timetable, subjects, equipment and punishment. During the lesson we constantly made comparisions against school today, identifying the similarities and differences. We even got to write with a quill pen!
As well as this we have learnt about the games Tudor Children used to play. We played the game 'Nine Men's Morris' which we really enjoyed.
alt alt alt
In Literacy we have all started our new unit: Stories with Historial Settings. Together we have read the book 'The Prince, the Cook and the Cunning King' which after loooking for clues, we discovered was set in Tudor England! We have been identifying and using powerful verbs and adverbs.

In Science we learnt some new vocabulary. We learnt what the words transparent, translucent and opaque mean. Then we went on a hunt around the classroom to find objects with these properties.

In P.E we are continuing to devlop and improve our ball skills. We even had a go at a netball match!
