Year 2

In Literacy this week we have started our new topic 'Night and Day'. To begin with we have been learning about animals that come out at night such as bats, owls, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers. This animals are called nocturnal animals.

We have found out our information about these nocturnal aniamls from power points, non-fiction comprehensions and the website 'All about animals.'

Here are some of the facts we found out about owls:

  • Owls like to eat slimy frogs and crunchy bugs. By Reggie-Ray
  • Owls live in holes in trees and old buildings like churches. By Ellie M
  • Did you know owls can not move their eyes? By Jakob
  • Owls can turn their heads nearly all the way around. By Jessica
  • Did you know some owls snore? By Lewis
  • The owl that hoots is the tawny owl. By Madison

If you want to learn more about nocturnal animals watch the power point below.

REMINDERS

  • Remember it is comic relief this Friday (15th March). Children come to school in non-uniform (red if possible).
  • India Day is the last day of term (28th March). Children can come dressed in the colours of the Indian flag which is orange, white and green.

WOW! We have had a super World Book Day with us all looking fantastic in such a variety of costumes. Thank you so much to all the parents for your help in making your child look brilliant!

We have taken part in lots of activities throughout the day but our favourite activities of all was the ...TEA PARTY!! Have a look at our photos.

Zumba
On Tuesday we warmed up ready for the rest of this half term with
our first Zumba lesson. This was with a lady called Charlotte. We
started off by doing some simple movements to warm up our bodies
before moving onto some more difficult Zumba routines. We all
thoroughly enjoyed this session and are already looking forward
to our next one.

Toys in the Past

We have started our next History unit this week on Toys Today and
in the Past. On Monday we enjoyed sharing our favourite toys with
our friends. We described what they were made from, what they
looked like and how they worked.  We then went on to think about
what questions we would like to ask a visitor to find out more about
toys from the past.

Here are some of our questions:

  • What is it made from?
  • How do you play it?
  • How many pieces did it have?
  • Was the wood painted?
  • Was the ball heavy or light?
  • Does it have brakes?
  • Did you have fun playing with it?

Art
In art this week we have been busy changing our hall display. We
made daffodils out of pipe cleaners and tissue paper which have
been put up around the top of the hall. Then for our display board
we made our own flowers using the technique of quilling. Have a
look. Don’t they look super!!

Maths
In maths this week we have been learning about the topic
of ‘Handling Data’. We started the week off by ‘thought
showering’ what we already know about this topic.

We went onto learn about tally marks and how they are
grouped in 5. We then used this to record some of our
own data before drawing a pictogram to show the data
collected.

On Tuesday we moved onto block graphs. Some of the
class worked with Mrs Case in the school hall to sort
out a pile of counting bears. They then worked as a
group to produce a block graph using some big mats.
Have a look at their work.

Back in the classroom some of us were busy opening
some post that we had received. It was a letter from
Krissy (the school cook) who asked for our help. She
needed us to organise the ingredients that she had
to order for pancakes into a block graph so it was
easier for the supplier to read.

alt

The rest of us worked with Mrs Sandoe and we had
to sort out a pile of coloured counters into the
separate colours and record this in a tally table
before creating a block graph to show the number
of each.

ICT
During ICT we used the computers to create a block
graph linked to our Maths lesson. Aren’t we clever!

Over the last few weeks we have been learning about Homes today and in the past.
We have been using the programme 'MAgic Grandad' who helps us to understand
what it was like in the past. Throughout our topic we have learnt how the external
features of our homes have changed along with many objects inside our home.

Did you know that in the past their kettle was made out of cast iron and was very
heavy? They even had to boil it on the range which took much longer than boiling
a kettle today.

Click below to find out some more interesting facts that we have learnt.

We have created our very own topic books and would love to share them with you.

Science

In science we have been designing and making some brilliant models using electrical
circuits. Please come and see our models along with our topic books next
Wednesday (13th) at 2.30pm in Year 2 classroom.
