Year 2

This week our Year 2 children went to Porthpean Outdoor Activity Centre to celebrate the completion of their SATs. The wet and windy weather didn't deter us and we had a super day of outdoor learning.

When we arrived at the centre the children were introduced to the instructors. They were then split into three groups to complete a carousel of activites. Each group had a turn at problem solving, archery and the climbing wall.

All of the adults were so impressed with how well behaved the children were. The children showed perserverance and determination too when faced with some of the more challenging physical and mental activities. We were especially pleased to see how the children supported and encouraged their peers throughout each task.

It was a pleasure to take the children out of school and we are all looking forward to our next school outing! Well done Year 2!

This week we have been busy continuing with our Art project '3D seasons'.

To begin with we discussed the four different seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, and found pictures of what trees look like within each season.

Afterwards we were all given a particular season and were asked to draw our own outline of a tree. Next we had to scrunch up small pieces of newspaper and apply it directly onto the background making sure that there was no gaps!

Then we started to cover the whole tree with a layer of papier mache by rubbing a little papier mache paste onto both sides of a smallish piece of paper and layering it over the top of the scunched up pieces of newspaper. We had to take our time to overlap the pieces of paper and smooth down all the edges. Have a look at our progress so far:

...and this is what we have to achieve:

In Literacy this week we have been practising our writing skills. We have based our writing on the story of the Little Red Riding Hood and have been using two interesting adjectives separated by a comma, as well as similes and various sentence starters.

Here are some examples of our descriptions of Little Red Riding Hood.

Wrapped around Little red Riding Hood's body is a cloak as red as a rose.

Her small eyes are as blue as the morning sky.

Newly polished shoes shine from her feet as she walks down the woods to take a basket of food to her Grandma.

A dress that is as white as a cloud covers her body.

Next week we will be using our new learning in order to write riddles for fairytale characters.

Reminders

Next Thursday (2nd May) the school will be closed due to Polling Day.

Please can we start to have premission slips and medical forms for Porthpean.

Many Thanks

Happy Easter!

Hope you all have a fantastic Easter holidays.

Thank you so much for all your hard work and support this term.

Best wishes

Mrs Sandoe & Mrs Case

Over the last two weeks Year 2 have been learning about time in maths. We have worked very hard to tell the time on an analogue clock as well as on a digital clock.

We began last week by just looking at o’clock and half past on the analogue clock and some of us very quickly moved on to the digital clock.

Next we looked at quarter past before moving onto quarter to. Quarter to was a bit trickier when it came to the digital clock as we had to remember to change the hour e.g. quarter to 1 is 12:45 on the digital clock.

Nevertheless we all did a fantastic job and Mrs Sandoe was very impressed so we all got a merit to celebrate our progress.

If you want to practise more time at home click on the interactive clock below.

This week we have been learning more about solving time word problems. We solved a range of problems, some of which involved us counting on and back in hours and for some of us in half hour intervals.

Below are some games that you can play to practise more time.

E-Safety

On Wednesday we had an assembly with a guest speaker who spoke to us about electrical devices such as laptops, computers, play stations, I pads, etc. The guest speaker asked us what games we enjoyed playing on our computers before talking to us about how we can stay safe on these. For example when playing on Mushy Monsters to not talk to ‘monsters’ we don’t know.
