Year 1-2

Welcome back to Year 1/2

After a long summer holiday the children came back to begin their new school year full of energy and excitement. They were keen to share their news and to find out whether the postcard they had sent to school had arrived! We have made a 'What Summer Means' display near the classroom computers....please come in and read the children's ideas.

Some of the class decided to make a holiday journal to remember all that they did over the six week break. They must have taken a very long time and are lovely records of all they did. The children have included writing, drawings, photos, leaflets, leaves and much more inside their journals. These are on display in the classroom too. Miss Bussandri and Miss Bingham were very impressed and gave each child two merits for their hard work!

Thank you to all the parents and carers for your help and support this week as we all settle into our new class routines. A few reminders:

  • The classroom door will be open around 8:10am for your child to put their belongings away ready for 'Wake and Shake.'
  • Reading books and records should be placed in your child's trough each morning for daily reading.
  • Reading books will be changed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday providing your child's reading record has been signed.
  • Spellings will be tested every Friday (beginning 14th September) and will be tested in the blue spelling book. This should be kept in your child's book bag and will be sent home so you can see how your child has got on with the spellings and dictation each week.
  • Year 2 will be tested on their times tables every Thursday (beginning 13th September) and will be tested in the green tables book. This should be kept in your child's book bag and will be sent home so you can see how your child has got on with their tables each week.
  • Homework will be sent home every Monday to be completed by the following Monday. A copy of the homework is displayed in the window alongside the spellings and tables lists. Please place completed homework with your child's homework diary into the blue homework box.
  • P.E will be every Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a full P.E kit so they are able to participate. Kits will remain in school until half term.
  • Show and tell will be on Friday. Please do not send in anything breakable or extremely valuable. Show and tell is a great opportunity for the children to share their hobbies, talents, interests and so things such as artwork, photos, certificates, photos, etc give lots of opportunities for discussion.
Notices go up in the class window as well as on the blog so please keep looking. If you have any questions please feel free to pop in.

Finally, the school will be closed on Monday 10th September for staff INSET. It will reopen Tuesday 11th September.

We hope to see lots of you next Friday!

What a way to end our half term. We all had a street party in the playground. We watched the coronation in the hall, went out to sing the National Anthem and then had a delicious feast. The prizes for crowns were announced. Well done to Jessica and J.J who received special awards for a super effort.

Have a great half term and we look forward to welcoming you all back

On Thursday 31st May we went on our end of year school trip. After learning about nocturnal animals and animals that come out at night Year 1/2 went to consolidate their learning at Feadon Farm with Gary and Alyson Zammit. It took about an hour to get there but we enjoyed talking to our partners and playing different games.

When we arrived Gary and Alyson met us and we put our things away in the beautiful lunch room that had fairy lights all over the ceiling. The first activity we did was to go on a woodland walk. We used our eyes, ears and noses to explore the nature around us. altalt

As we continued around on our woodland walk we saw lots of bird boxes and also hollows which different animals had nested in over the last few years.

                   Who lived here?
Then Gary and Alyson took us up to the top field to look under the 'lids'. We were split into two different groups: Toads and Newts. We saw slow worms, toads and lots of ants!

After exploring in the fields it was soon time for lunch. We walked back through the chicken field and saw the reindeers too.

Gary and Alyson's dog Binky came to join us. He's known as the hoover.

After lunch we went back into our two groups. We took it in turns to feed the foxes, explore the animals room (where we saw toads, mice, a snake, vole and animal skulls) and stroke the hedgehog.

We came back together and then it was time for the falconary activity. The birds flew to us and behaved well for us. Chunks was a bit naughty but he made us laugh, especially when we watched him jogging!

Position and Direction
This week in Maths we have been learning about half and quarter turns clockwise and anti-clockwise. We also learned about the points on a compass and used the rhyme below to help us:

N
aughty   Elephants   Squirt   Water

North        East           South   West

The pictures below show the activities we completed in class. On Tuesday and Wednesday we worked to pairs to use our knowledge and understanding of turns to follow and write directions using the four compass points.

The group of children in the picture below went out on Tuesday to search for a missing item that Miss Bussandri would need on Friday for the Jubilee party. They had to work in pairs to follow a set of directions. Back in class they told the rest of Year 1/2 what they had to do, making sure they used the new mathematical vocabulary we had been learning:
"turn, direction, forwards, clockwise, anti-clockwise, North, South, East, West, compass, quarter"

The picture below shows one of the activities we did at the end of our maths lessons this week. Miss Bussandri read us some directions and we had to follow them carefully and draw the route on our white boards. Look at how well we did!!

Jubilee Jelly
In English we have been learning about 'bossy' verbs and how they are used in Instructions. We looked at the special features of good instructions:
* Title
*Tempt the reader
*What we need
*Method
*Ending sentence

While Miss Bussandri showed us how to make jelly we had to take notes focusing on the 'bossy' verbs she used and the adverbs we heard too. We then wrote our instructions remembering all the things we had learned. At the end of the lesson we shared them with our partner to show them what we were pleased with and to see whether there was anything that we could have improved to make them even better.

Singing with Pride
We learned the National Anthem in music and sang along using musical instruments to help us sing to the correct beat. There are lots of 'Wow' words in the National Anthem.

Creative crowns
In Art this term we have been focusing on printing. We have used shapes to block print from both randomly and to create repeating patterns. Here we have designed and made our own block print using art staws. When the glue is dry we will dip the crowns into paint and then press them onto a plain piece of paper that contrast the paint we have chosen-aren't we clever!

Tomorrow we will go on our school trip to Feadon Farm and we are all very excited. We are also looking forward to celebrating the Jubilee on Friday. Pictures will follow of these two special events at a later date.

Have a lovely half term break. Thank you again for all of your help and support.
