Year 1-2

In Religious Education this term both Year 1 and Year 2 have been learning about aspects of Christianity. While in Year 1 the children have been focusing on special places for Christians the Year 2 children have been learning about special books for Christians.

This week our Year 1 children looked at the special features of Christian places of worship. In particular the children looked at how stained glass windows are used in some churches as a focal point within the special building. We discussed how the pictures reflected different stories from the Bible.

The children then created their own stained glass windows. Here are some of their creations. Didn't they do well!

The Year 2 children furthered their knowledge and understanding of different stories within the Bible by reading the story of Adam and Eve. We discussed how this special story for Christians was found in the Old Testament and how this was found in the first section of the Bible. After reading the story the children took different roles to recreated the story in freeze frame pictures. They then picked a picture of interest to write about. Look at the pictures below and see whether your child can explain what is happening in each picture.

This Christian story teaches Christians that they should do what they know to be  the 'right thing' and not listen to what other people tell them to do as they do not always act in the best interest of the person.

E.g. You love going on the spider web. On Tuesday your friend in another class tells you to go on the adventure playground with them but your classes turn isn't until Thursday!
What should you do?
What should you say to your friend?

On Friday 19th October Year 1/2 will be visiting the Church. Letters about this trip have been sent home with an attached consent form. Please could these be returned a.s.a.p. If you are able to help with this trip it would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully the weather will be on our side and it will be a lovely autumnal walk to the church.

While walking to the church we will be looking for the different human and physical features within out local area (linked to our Geography topic!)

Finally, this week in Maths we have been learning about the value of 2 and 3 digit numbers- Place Value. We talked about hundreds, tens and units. Hundreds we count in 100's, Tens in 10's and Units in 1's. Below is the link to a game which can support your children in their understanding.

This week in Maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We began by naming the different 2D shapes we already knew. Next we explored our local environment (the classroom) for the 2D shapes around us.

Some of the children in the class took the photos below of the 2D shapes we saw.
Can you name any of the?

altaltaltaltaltaltaltaltaltaltaltaltaltaltalt

After that we began to try to describe how the 2D shapes differed; their properties...e.g. how is a square different from a circle?

2D shapes are flat shapes. We can describe them by talking about the number of sides and corners they have. We can also talk about whether the sides are all the same length of whether the sides are curved or straight.

We took it in turns to use the feely bag to hide a 2D shape. One child had to then try to describe the 2D shape they could feel by talking about its properties. We worked well together and helped each other to remember the key vocabulary we had been using. Listen to what we said below!

(function() { var po = document.createElement("script"); po.type = "text/javascript"; po.async = true; po.src = "http://d15mj6e6qmt1na.cloudfront.net/assets/embed.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(po, s); })();
Here are some of our shape pictures and art work. We enjoyed working creatively with shapes to design imaginative pictures. What shapes can you spot in our pictures?

Listen to how two of the children talk about their shape pictures here.

(function() { var po = document.createElement("script"); po.type = "text/javascript"; po.async = true; po.src = "http://d15mj6e6qmt1na.cloudfront.net/assets/embed.js"; var s = document.getElementsByTagName("script")[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(po, s); })();
If you would like to continue to work on your child's knowledge and understanding of the topic of Shape at home, click on the picture below to play a shape game.

On Friday we celebrated European Languages Day in the Infants by learning about Spain. In the morning we arrived to school in our red and yellow clothes looking very colourful!

Before long our visitor, Nick ( a chef from Eden), had arrived and set up an enormous paella pan in the hall for our cooking demonstration. He talked to us about the ingredients he was using and how he was making our vegetarian paella.

Watch the video clip below to see what happened.

On Monday we will be writing a recount about what happened on European Languages Day for our Big Write. Tonight each child has been sent home some picture prompts to help them with the Big Talk. There are some notes about these on the sheet. Watching the video clip will also help discussion for the Big Talk.

We had lots of fun on Friday and can't wait to see which country we will be next year!

Thank you for all of your support.

This week in Year1/2 we have lots to be happy about. We have been continuing with our papier mache bowls in art an they are now looking really good. Our next step is decorate the outside with a pattern and to create fuits to place inside the bowls using salt dough. Keep looking on the blog to see how these develop!

You may have received a postcard through your letterbox this week. In Geography we are learning about our local area. We discussed how we all live locally and that we all have addresses which are specific to us. We discussed the different lines of the address:

1st line = name of the person receiving the postcard
2nd line = number of the house and road name
3rd line = town
4th line = postcode

Some children brought their postcard in (with the stamp from the sorting office) for show and tell this week. If you haven't received yours yet ......keep a look out. I'm sure it will be with you shortly.

In SEAL we talked about what makes us happy in school. We discussed how everyone should be treated fairly, how we should share resources, look after one another and respect eachother and school property. Listen to the recordings below for what we felt made us happy at school.

Next Friday (28th September) we will be celebrating European Languages Day. The Infants will be learning about Spain. Your child may come to school wearing red and yellow. We would ask that you contribute 50p for the day....this year we have a chef from Eden coming to talk to the children about Spainish food and to cook a vegetarian paella. This will be a very exciting and interesting day for the children and the blog will show some of the highlights next week!

Finally, congratulations to Hallie who became a school council member for Year 2. She impressed us with her manifesto and we hope she will represent the thoughts and feelings of Year 1/2. Well done!

We have had a busy week back in Year 1/2. This week we have been using the book 'Oliver's Fruit Salad' by Vivian French as inspiration for our writing. Throughout the week we have used the book to recall our favourite memories of time spent with our family, discussed our favourite fruits and the benefits of eating healthily, aswell as recounting the events of the story in the correct order.

Here are some of the children in Year1/2's memories:

"I am with my sister. We are playing in the garden. I am feeling excited." Erin Honey Year 1

"Me and my dad got our boards and was diving into the beach. I was feeling happy. The sea was warm." Ethan Adamson Year 1

"On a sunny hot day I went to my nans house. Me and Thomas had a sleep over. It was the first time I had a sleep over and I was excited! I made wobbly jelly I popped out my spotty tent in my nans living room." Tilly Johnson Year 2

"On a windy day I went to Penhayle. It was my special tea for my dad I had a tortilla with grated cheese in it. I did something funny. When I went to the pepsi ....CRASH! I pushed a button and ice was raining madly all over the floor." Kyle Leo Year 2

Tonight (Friday 14th September) your child will have their first 'Big Talk' homework of the year. You will have received two letters: one explaining why we do the 'Big Write' at Sandy Hill Academy  (which will take place fortnightly). The other explains this weeks 'Big Talk' task and has a number of prompt questions for you to discuss with your child using the planning frame. We decided to move the 'Big Talk' to Friday and the 'Big Write' to Monday to enable you more time to complete the homework.

In Letters and Sounds we have been recapping previous sounds and focussing on those that we are less confident on. Below is the link to a website that has lots of different games linked to phonics and high frequency words. Please explore the site, it's really useful .......and lots of fun. The children really enjoy playing the games and are learning at the same time.

In Maths this week we have been focussing on number and counting on and back using the numberline. I have sent every child home with a set of number cards (0-20 for Year 1 and 0-100 for Year 2). If you have any spare time please cut up the numbers and play any of the games below:
  • Shuffle the numbers and see if you can re-order them correctly.
  • Pick up to 6 numbers and see if you can order them from largest to smallest or vice versa.
  • Pick 1 number and ask your child to tell you the number that is one more or one less/ten more or ten less.
  • Pick a number at random and ask your child to say the next six numbers e.g. 4....5,6,7,8,9,10

Thank you for all of your continued support.
