Science Day

Year 5

In science this week year 5 have been looking at how to produce static electricity. Some materials, such as plastic with wool - or synthetic fabrics such as acrylic attract each other when you rub them together. Year 5 looked at how a balloon and a snake charmer can do this. Take a look at them trying to achive this:

As part of their maths this week, the children have had the oportunity to produce a maths game of their own. They have had to involve different mathematical problems using x + - or ÷.

We hope you have had a lovely long weekend.

In year 5 this week we have been continuing with our legend work. At the beginning of the week we started to plan our legend and then we began to write the opening, focusing on the setting and characters.  The rest of the week we have been focusing on the build up, the problem and finally the conclusion. Once again the standard of writing in year 5 has been super.

In P.E we have been continuing with zumba and we have also started to practice for sports day which really isn't far away. Take a look at us in action so far:

This week in year 5 we have been looking at different Legends. The children read a legend called Bedd Gelert, from this they had to discover its features and then act out the story. The children really enjoyed getting into role and had some fantastic facial expressions.

In P.E we have been jumping. The children had to practice jumping on one leg and landing on two. They also had a certain distance they had to jump to and each time that they did it, they had to reduce the amount of hops. Year 5 were really good at this.

We hope you have a lovely long weekend.

Year 5 have been extremely busy this week continuing with their amazing myths. At the beginning of the week they started to plan which has lead onto writing an opening, a middle and an ending. They have worked so hard on this topic, here are some examples so far:

There was a time when fun and happiness did not exist, when the world was a cold, dark place. The Gods did not know how to change that but one did, Zeus the kings of Gods.

Flora (the candy floss) would always try to make fun but nothing would work. The fair stayed boring for many years. One day Flora went to Zeus for it all to change.

Thousands of year ago, before the sun was in the sky, there was a poor farm boy named Manae. He lived in spark, a small village on Mt Ember. Mt Ember was a gigantic volcanic Island with towering cliffs and a huge, golden statue.

Manae loved watching the waves smash into the cliffs like a battering ram hitting a castle wall. Every full moon, people had to pay blood to the statue to warn off Throne, the evil beast of the sea.

A long time ago before the world was very old there lived a weird creature called Jett, he lived in an ancient garden within bushes and grass. Jett has an elephant head, a human body and human feet/shoes. Bilbo has a kangaroo body, jelly fish legs and human trainers on his feet. Pheobe is a human like character. The back garden is very quiet because Jett loves to live in a quiet places and does not like to be seen.

Year 5 have started zumba again as part of their P.E., they remembered the routines really well. Here they are really enjoying themselves:

In art this week the children painted their mythical creatures. They are looking really good.

Welcome back and we hope that you have all had a lovely Easter break.

In literacy our project is on Myths and Legends.  This week the children have read a range of myths and analysed the different features that they have read.  The children have created some super mythical creatures and thought carefully about the setting in which it could live.  Next week they will write their own myth :)

In art the children have designed and created a mythical creature out of clay.   They look fantastic! Lots of concentration was needed and super effort was applied by all :)

This half term, year 5 will be doing athletics in P.E. This week they have been doing different running activities, here they are in action:

Miss O'Brien will now be teaching the year 5's altogether for Maths & English for the first half-term back. This is to consolidate the learning so far, to focus on some Year 5 objectives and to allow the children to work altogether. The children will then split back into smaller groups for the final half-term before summer to really focus on individual targets in preparation for Year 6. The children are working extremely hard and making some fantastic progress.
