Year 4

This week in literacy we have been continuing our work on adverts.  We are going to work in mixed groups of years 3 and 4 to come up with an idea for a piece of unused land on the field.  We must work together to decide what we will do with it, who will use it and pitch our idea Dragon's Den style to Mr Weale and Mrs Green who will  pick the best idea.  We have had some super ideas ranging from long jump pits, a shaded reading area, a school farm and a fish pond.

In numeracy this week we have been learning about nets of shape, properties of 2D shapes.

In science this week we had fun making spinners to show us how air resistance effects gravity.  It is a force which slows down objects that are moving through the air.  It was also shown how it helps a parachute land safely to the ground.

In history we started our new topic learning about Anglo-Saxons.  We now know that they invaded Britain, coming in long wooden boats, from Germany, Denmark and Holland to gain land and power.  We made passports to show what we had learnt and drew pictures of what we imagined they looked like.

In literacy this week we have continued our topic of poetry by writing our own school based poem.  We really enjoyed interviewing Terry, the schools caretaker, to give us information and ideas that we then used in our poems.

We have been given an extra week of Zumba this half term...some of us were able to show our street dance moves to the rest of the class!!

We had an interesting assembly this week with some lifeguards from the RNLI who have shown us how we can stay safe on the beach.

We have returned to school refreshed after our Easter break.. Despite the weather we all got up to some fun activities such as going on holiday, bowling and of course eating lots of chocolate.

Swimming started for year 4 this week.

In PE we have started to learn the ball skills needed to play rounders.  We have been been learning to throw under arm and how to catch properly and also know that we have to keep control of the ball.  Rounders club starts in a few weeks so hopefully there will be quite a few of us joining.

In science this week we have bee continuing our work on friction.  This week we focussed on forces and how friction may affect them.  We now know that we can measure forces in Newtons using a force meter, and that Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity.

The footballers played really well in two matches this week playing St Stephens and Mount Charles.

It has been a very cold end to the Spring Term.  In maths this week we have been looking at different ways to display data, in particular bar charts and Carroll diagrams.  In literacy we have been writing poems which we then used to put in Easter cards we made for our family's and friends.

We had a really fun last day of term celebrating India day.  We all came to school dressed in the colours of the Indian flag.  In the morning we had an assembly where we watched year three perform the Bollywood dancing they have been practicing over the last few weeks.  We then looked at some photos Miss Bingham took when she went to India last half term holiday.  We noticed that there are both similarities and differences between their culture and ours.  It was really interesting to look at the schools, homes and shops.  They are also very good dancers!!

We were then able to make some Indian art.  We learnt all about Gond Art which are paintings of simple everyday objects painted using natural colours to make dots of colour all over the picture.  We used the template of a bird to create our Gond Art.  We coloured them in with pens then used sequins as the coloured dots.  They all looked really effective and will be displayed around the school.

Year four wish you all a very Happy Easter break and will see you in a couple of weeks!!

In science this week we have been looking at friction and how it effects objects.  We conducted an experiment using a toy car and different textured ramps.  One ramp was smooth and shiny, one ramp was covered in rubber, one was covered in sand paper and one was covered in carpet.  We let the car down each of the ramps to see which car would go the fastest.  The car that went down the smooth shiny ramp went the fastest and the car that went down the ramp covered in carpet went the slowest.  This showed us the effect that friction has on an object.

We have continued our work on rich and poor Tudors using drama.  We worked in small group to rehearse a short demonstration of some of the activities a rich Tudor might do in his daily life.  We then performed our scenes to the rest of the class who had to guess what activity we were acting.  Some of us chose sport and activities such as tennis, hunting and chess and others chose food and activities such as eating at a banquet.

We will be brightening up our classroom with pictures we sketched in art.  We looked again at observational drawing by sketching daffodils to mark the start of spring.  Hard to believe when looking out the window!!

The football team played really well against St Mewan this week coming home with a draw, nil, nil.
