Year 3

It was our last swimming lesson this week and we had a great time at our fun session. We had floats and were able to play games with our friends. Our swimming has really improved over the half term and so has our confidence. All the adults who taught us have been very impressed.

Also this week:

We have been practising our Bollywood Dance ready to perform to the visiting Indian teachers next Monday.

In History we learnt about the Pagan beliefs of the Anglo Saxons and discovered many of our days of the week are named after Pagan gods!

In French we learnt animal names.

Our ICT unit this term has been databases. In our lessons we have learnt how to filter and search different types of databases, created our own records and compared paper and computer based databases.

This week we set up our own Year 3 Travel Agents! We took it in turns to role play as customers and travel agents and used everything we have learnt to search for each others perfect holiday!

Here we are in action:

Also this week:

In Maths we have been studying shape. Here are Mrs Green's group working together to make 2D elastic shapes.

In Literacy we had a Dragon's Den Challenge. Everyone in Year 3 and 4 were mixed up in small groups. We then had to create posters and write a pitch to present to the 'Dragons' with an idea for what to do with an unused area of land on the field. We came up with some great suggestions such as: keeping chickens, a long jump, a wildlife area, crazy golf and a games room. We used all the skills we learnt last week to be as persuasive as possible.

In History we became archaeologists studying different artefacts found at Sutton Hoo, an Anglo Saxon burial site. We looked for clues in the pictures to help us guess what the artefacts were and what they were made from. At the end of the lesson we were shown the answers. Some of them really suprised us and for some we were correct!

We have been learning all about persuasive language and techniques this week. Throughout the week we have studied a range of persuasive genres and identified what it is that makes them so persuasive. Next week we have a Dragon's Den challenge!

In Maths Mrs Green's group have been investigating nets of 3D shapes. We started the week using Polydron to physically make a range of 3D shapes and then unfolding them to their net form. We then moved onto matching 3D shapes to their nets. Finally our end of week challenge was to design and make a box to fit a random object we were given. We had to consider the best shape box to make, measure and draw it out and then construct it.

Also this week:

In R.E we used Bible references to find different animals mentioned within the Bible.

In Art we learnt how to draw sweets, making them look 3D on the paper.

In History this week we learnt the definition of Invasion and Settlement.

We sorted different words and pictures under these headings and created our own Anglo Saxon passports which included lots of details we learnt during the lesson.

In Art we finished our Hanzel and Gretal houses:

Year 3 and 4 interviewed Terry, the school caretaker, on Monday and made lots of notes about  his job. We then turned these notes into rhyming poems entitled 'The Caretaker'. Here are some examples:

I am the caretaker

sweeping up the hall,

I am the caretaker

I love this school!

I am the caretaker

"NOT ANOTHER LOO!

I've already got enough jobs to do."

I am the caretaker,

I enjoy DIY.

I collect balls off the roof

when they're kicked to the sky.

I have six children of my own,

it's past six o'clock when I get home.

I don't want you throwing your litter;

I have to pick it up when it's cold and bitter.

I'm the caretaker

odd jobs to do.

I'm the caretaker

looking after you.

We have had a busy week back.....

In ICT we have started our unit on data bases. We have learnt the meaning of the terms 'Field, Record and Database'. Can you remember what they are?

We then had a race between a paper and computer database. First we had to find answers to questions using a paper database and write down how quickly we managed to complete the task. After that we went to the computer suite and used a computer based database in Excel to answer similar questions. We were all quicker on the computer so we discussed the advantages of computer databases.

In Literacy we have been studying the poem 'The Dinner Lady', identifying language features and punctuation. Next week we will be interviewing the school caretaker to write a poem about him!

In Art we have started designing 'Hanzel and Gretal Houses' using observational drawings of Liquorice Allsorts.

Finally in Music we learnt and performed a rap about Noah's Ark!

It was great fun and helped us to learn about keeping a beat.

We have enjoyed all sorts of activities this week as part of our India Week!

This included tasting food with our hands and making sure we followed the rules for this in India.

Hindi maths,

Exploring information booklets sent from 'The Children's Academy' in Mumbai,

Gond Art,

Saltdough Diya lamps for Diwali,

Warli art,

and Bollywood dancing.

Here we are with our outstanding performance!
